PRODUCTION HISTORY
DISCOVERING MAGENTA's first fully staged production was on September 1, 5, and 6 at the Hudson Guild Theatre in NYC as part of the Thespis Festival.
A portion of Discovering Magenta was produced at Oklahoma Central University as part of their STRIPPED series in 2007.
Developmental readings of the play have been held at Yale University, California State University at San Bernardino, and the University of Southern California.
SYNOPSIS
DISCOVERING MAGENTA is about a mental health worker, Henry, trying to help a catatonic patient, Katrina. Henry struggles to find his way in the world, supported by his best friend Eliot, new friend Cole, the mysterious Rose, his colleague Rachel, and the now-awake Katrina. Katrina has her own demons that she is both fighting and trying to fully remember -- is someone from her past trying to track her down? Or is it all in her mind? Henry and Katrina strive to find life's happiness amidst the challenges of the day and the sorrows of the past.
CHARACTERS
Characters (in order of appearance)
Katrina: 20’s. Someone with a strong core who has been beaten down by life circumstances.
Rachel: 30’s. A nurse, pleasant without being incredibly invested in her patients.
Henry: late 20’s/early-to-mid 30’s. An everyman still working on finding his path in life. Earnest, well-meaning.
Eliot: late 20’s/early-to-mid 30’s: The comedian. Doesn’t take too much seriously, but genuinely values Henry’s friendship.
Rose: 20’s/30’s. Exotic and attractive and a mystery. We don’t know what’s going on in her mind at any particular time.
Cole: 30’s. Charismatic, sincere, eager to please.
